Course overview

Today the many species of wildlife is on the verge of extinction and as scientists say this is the 6th great planetary extinction called the Holocene Extinction. This state of the world has made the zoologists more in demand than ever before. Let us first see what zoology is all about. It is a division of biology dealing with the animal family which is concerned with their behavior, how they interact with other species, and the environment. Zoology studies will help in preserving habitat and managing the adaptation of wildlife to climate change like global warming etc. You may wonder if zoology is the right choice for you. It is, if you have a keen interest in outdoors like in backpacking, camping, or even wilderness survival.

Course group details

As far as the courses are concerned, you can earn a graduate, post graduate and a doctoral degree in zoology . But most entry-level positions require at least a bachelor's degree. The following subjects are offered in zoology studies: anatomy, physiology, parasitology, virology, ecology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics etc.
Zoology is a very vast field and can choose a study pertaining to a specific species or animal group from this list:
  • Cetology: study of marine mammals, like whales, dolphins, and seals
  • Entomology: study of insects, such as ants, bees and spiders
  • Herpetology: study of reptiles and amphibians such as alligators, snakes, salamanders, and frogs
  • Ichthyology: study focuses on wild fish, like stingray, rainbow trout and piranha
  • Mammalogy: study mammals, like deer, wolves, chimpanzees, giraffe, monkeys and elephants
  • Parasitology: carries out research on the parasites which plague other wildlife, such as ticks and leeches and how they impact their host on whom they thrive
  • Ornithology: study of birds especially the endangered species
  • Ethology: this study pertains to understanding and analyzing animal behavior
  • Paleozoology: Study of fossil remains, which helps in investigating the evolution of animals.

After completing the course a zoologist is capable of studying the behaviour, evolution, genetics, diseases and life cycle of animals and wildlife.

Jobs for zoologists are available in the government or the private sector where they can study the wild species in the wild or in captivity like in their natural habitat of the forest or wildlife parks or high seas or in zoos and aquariums. Zoologists use modern gadgets and devices like GIS, RFID chips to track movement of animals and map the changes in their habitat and modelling software to predict future movements. One unique distinguishing feature of many jobs here is the irregular hours of field work dependent on the habits of animals. Often zoologists handle animal redistribution, breeding program, living enclosures, conservation groups, carry out research in veterinary drugs. Often the work environment may be interesting because of travel, but can also become strenuous or isolating.

If you have a strong desire to protect the endangered species and other wildlife from the strains of the loss of habitat, harmful impact of the environment, climate change, afforestation, disease, etc. then a career in zoology is the right choice.
